Joel David Schine

Joel David Schine, a longtime resident of Westport recent resident of Huntington, died peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughters at his home on Sunday, February 14, 2010. Born in Bridgeport, April 21, 1927, a son of the late Isaac and Rose Schine. Mr. Schine was a graduate of Yale University class of 1948 and had served in the United States Navy. He was president of the family owned business City Lumber Co. and Cilco Terminal. Mr. Schine was a representative in Westport on the RTM from 1963 to 1964, was an active board member of the Child Guidance Center of Bridgeport for more than 35 years, a former board member of the Jewish federation of Bridgeport and was a reading and math tutor for the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport. He was a member of the early Saturday morning service Torah Study group at Congregation Bnai Israel and was a former member of Temple Israel of Westport. Mr. Schine enjoyed opera and classical music, the study of history, vacation time with his family at Bald Mountain Camps in Maine, and the film groups he attended with his wife and friends. Joel was the beloved husband of Abigail Elstein Schine; beloved father to his daughter, Carla Schine Dener and her husband, Adam, his daughter, Rachel Schine Star and her husband, Doug; devoted grandfather to Noah and Leah Star and Ross and Ruby Dener; and beloved uncle to his seven nieces and nephews. He is also mourned by his step-children, Dan Paul-Heskins and his wife, Randi, Richard Paul and his wife, Renee Calarco and Sheryl Paul; and step-grandchildren, Frances Paul-Heskins and her husband, Josh Benjamin and Samantha Paul-Heskins. Services will take place on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Congregation Bnai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue, Bridgeport. Interment will follow at Bnai Israel Cemetery on Kings Highway in Fairfield. The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, is in care of arrangements.
